What Are You Worth Without the Driver?

This week, Keir Starmer banned under-16s from TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

GLP-1 drugs are suppressing the hunger signal that built the impulse snack category.

AI is doing to professional services and SaaS what the checkout ban did to confectionery in 2022 — removing the mechanism that made certain revenue feel inevitable.

Three different industries. Three different drivers being removed. The same underlying question in each case.

We've spent two posts looking at what history says happens next. Bottled water lost its safety driver in 1908 and took sixty years to rebuild — on taste, status and identity, not safety. Condoms lost their fear driver gradually from the late 1980s and rebuilt on pleasure and sensation. Confectionery lost its checkout trigger in 2022 and the brands that held up were the ones with their own occasion — chosen rather than grabbed.

The pattern is consistent. Categories don't die when their driver is removed. They reveal themselves. What's left is what people actually wanted, independent of the thing that was pushing them toward it.

Which makes the question simple to ask and hard to answer honestly.

For food manufacturers: is your brand on someone's mental shopping list — or was it just in the right place at the right moment?

For social media platforms: does your product create genuine value for users who have to actively choose it — or was engagement always something that happened to them?

For SaaS businesses: if switching cost dropped to zero tomorrow, what percentage of your customers would renew — and why?

For professional services firms: what does a client consciously pay for when the work AI can't do is the only work left?

None of these are comfortable questions. But the businesses that are asking them now — before the answer becomes urgent — are the ones that won't need sixty years to find the next version of themselves.

What's your version of the question?
